Find the Story
Our overall goal during the editorial phase is to create a film that fits the brief on tone, feeling, content, and runtime. It's not the final film, but it should feel like the final film should feel. At least a little.
Elements to Pay Attention To
Here are the cinematic tools we're using in the editorial phase.
Overall Story and Message.
Are the characters, conflicts, ideas, and structure working?
Specific Shots and Takes.
Are these shots the right ones to tell that story? Are there other takes you remember liking better?
Feelings.
Ultimately, story is meant to make us feel. Does this feel like we want it to?
Pacing.
Is it to rushed? Too slow?
Feel/Think/Know/Do.
Remember our audience transformation work? Does this match or improve our decisions there?
Music.
Music is critical to the film. How are the tracks we've selected? Do they fit?
Copy.
Text on screen might not look right, but the copy itself is. Definitely give us notes on that.
Elements We'll Work on Later
Since this is an early draft, here's an incomplete list of things you can ignore. All these finishing aspects are taken care of after our next big milestone: Picture Lock.
Audio mix.
That is, the volume of sounds relative to each other. We do our best to make sure everything is intelligible, but we're not focusing on fixing issues or optimizing sound.
Graphic styles.
Right now, we're refining timing and content, not how it looks.
Color/Contrast balance.
We'll make each frame sing once we picture lock.
How to Give Feedback
Frame.io
Typically, we use a tool called Frame.io for feedback. Frame.io is a tool that allows you to place notes right on the video so we don't have to go back and forth on "did you mean this or that?" Think of it like a YouTube player with a comment box. When you have a note, pause the video, and type out the note below.
Consolidated Notes Document
If Frame.io doesn't work for some reason, we're happy to get notes as timecoded documents, too. When you have a thought, pause the video, tell us the timecode and your note. When all your stakeholders have added their comments, send us the doc!
